TOL is proud to present NATALYA PHILLIPS

Sixteen year old singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Natalya Phillips is making a lot of noise with her debut album, “Whisper.” Natalya takes you on an artful, musical journey with a powerful selection of her original songs which range from the philosophical and cinematic to the playfully simple. The album’s instrumentation is rich yet down-to-earth.

Traditional instruments including banjo, ukulele, accordion and classical steel-string and acoustic guitars, are enhanced by refined orchestral components. The title track, “Whisper,” is a soothing, mid-tempo blend of folk and classic elements featuring strings and horns with acoustic guitars. The pure and poignant “Don’t Say Nothing,” features Natalya singing and playing piano, beautifully illustrating her unique ability of melding the instrument with her moving vocal performance. Complimented by lush cello, viola and violin arrangements, this piece is evocative of a motion picture soundtrack. The collection of songs in this project provoke wide-ranging emotional responses, from the somber, melancholic “I’ll Never Know,” to the buoyant and delightful “My Heart,” which elicits the joy of surrendering to love. The album closes with an uplifting a cappella number, reminiscent of a traditional African American spiritual, in which Natalya implores the listeners to please, “Feel Loved.”

Natalya’s prolific and sophisticated songwriting skills are evident in this beautifully emotive and soul-stirring compilation, which will prove enduring and inspirational for music lovers of all ages.

  Natalya Phillips

Natalya Phillips was born in San Diego, California, in 1995.  Daughter to an African-Venzuelan music producer father, and a biologist-turned-teacher mother of Swedish descent, Natalya is a genetic fascination with incredible artistic sensibilities.   She has been expressing herself musically since before she could walk or talk. As a young child she loved drawing, sophisticated sumi-e painting, playing her ukulele, and everything that had anything to do with music.

While home schooled as an elementary student, Natalya was encouraged to pursue her artistic interests.  At the age of seven, Natalya was cast in the Old Globe Theater's musical, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." She was one of the youngest cast members ever to be hired for the production.  When the 2002 "Grinch" season was over, Natalya began commercial acting and modeling in the LA entertainment market.  At this time, she became more focused on her singing and song writing and also started vocal instruction. Under the guidance of teaching greats, such as the legendary Terri Weiss of Los Angeles, Natalya worked to refine her vocal and stage techniques. She soon began performing for larger audiences and frequently sang the National Anthem at special engagements including sporting events and tournaments and graduations.  She also performed at the San Diego Museum of Arts and other local arts festivals.

Natalya worked in a professional capacity for nearly four years, booking regional, national and international print and commercial jobs. At age ten, she caught the eye of the casting director for musical giant, Prince, and in 2005 was featured as his co-star in several musical and cinematic projects.   Though Natalya loved the LA entertainment business, she put it on hold to devote her attention to becoming a more dedicated academic student, to accept the invitation of once again working with the cast of "The Grinch" in 2006, and to lend her vocal talents in the recording studio to many local recording artists.

Currently a "straight-A" sophomore student in high school, Natalya continues to devote much time to writing songs, participating in high school speech and debate, and performing with a competitive show choir.  Today Natalya loves to sing and compose music more than ever, and is finalizing work on her first full-length CD project slated for release in the early half of 2011.
